Every year we go to at least one minor league baseball game and it is a ton of fun. We are still hoping that we will get a stadium here in Loudoun County but until then, we like going to the Potomac Nationals in Woodbridge, VA. Here is a routine that we have perfected over the years and it has become our annual tradition.
We pick an evening game when the weather is warm and we start our day by driving through the backroads of Clifton, VA. Clifton has preserved its historic charm and small town feel. As you drive down Main Street, you will see just a few business and restaurants–you might even drive right through it if you blink, but it is definitely worth checking out. It has a lot of history (railroad and civil war), and you can read more about it here: About Clifton, VA
We have lunch in one of the cute restaurants – most of which have outdoor seating and enjoy the beautiful day and scenery. There are several restaurants right on Main St. along with an ice cream shop.
After lunch, we head to Ikea in Woodbridge. A little bribe of ice cream and fireworks allows us to shop for about 90 minutes. We load up the car with whatever ‘stuff’ we HAD to have and we then drive over to Pfitzner Stadium for the baseball game.
The Potomac Nationals do lots of kid promotions and they have a kids club you can join if you go frequently. Some of the evening games have fireworks after the game and then they let the kids run the bases. My kids L-O-V-E it! By this time, it is late so we put the kids in their PJ’s in the car and start the drive home—they are usually asleep within 10 minutes of getting into the car. It is great fun for us all and we can’t wait to do it again this year.
If you are looking to buy tickets, check out Certifikid first- they run promotions frequently. Without a promotion tickets run from $10-$16. They do offer senior and military discounts and kids under 3 are free. The stadium has typical ball game concessions and they do fun activities during the breaks between innings.
If you’d rather head north to MD for a game, there is also the Frederick Keys – also a very fun time.
