One of our favorite things to do on the 4th of July is attend the Leesburg parade. Here are a few tips to help you navigate this event.
- The parade starts at 10:00 AM, and you might think that getting there at 9:00 AM is plenty early, but it isn’t. If you want a spot on the shady side of the street and in the front row, you will want to go earlier than that. Bring some coffee and eat your breakfast sitting on the curb. If you have little ones, bring some bubbles or a book to read to pass the time. They won’t close down the streets until 9:30 though, so keep that in mind.
- The parade goes down King Street, it starts at Ida Lee Park and goes all the way down to Fairfax Street. If you can, try to get a spot to sit where King Street intersects with Market Street. That is where most of the performances take place and you will have a great view before all of the parade marchers get tired.
- My favorite part is the American Originals Fife and Drum Corps that plays in the beginning of the parade. They play a few songs in the square to get the parade started. It gives me all the chills and definitely puts you in a patriotic mood.
- The parade features fire trucks, fancy cars, politicians, performances by various dance groups and lots more. And a lot of these groups throw candy and treats, so bring something with you to carry it all home.
- Definitely bring water, wear a hat and put on sunscreen. The parade lasts for at least an hour or more, so it is definitely worth checking out, especially if you have kids.
